Q1: Do you provide communal single-sex changing and showering facilities?
The outdoor pool that is operated by Council has cubical shower facilities.
Q2: Do you provide single occupancy changing and showering facilities? If so, how many at each site?
The swimming pool has cubical showers and toilets with communal changing space. The Wairarapa Events Centre has two singles occupancy showers.
Q3: Please provide any policies or procedures that apply to trans-identified people who wish to use the changing and showering facilities in your sites.
Not applicable.
Q4: How are your different changing and showering facilities labelled and described?
The pool signage is gender specific (male/female). At the Events Centre, it is a mixture of both gender specific signage for one set of toilet facilities and the other two facilities in the buildings are labelled toilets.
Q5: At your sites, which changing room and showering facilities is a trans-identified male permitted to use?
They can self-determine where they are most comfortable to change. Staff, if asked will provide advice and guidance if required.
SUFW: In Q5 you state that a trans-identifying male can self-select a changing area, but that staff can provide advice or guidance if asked - if there are no policies in Q3, what advice or guidance can your staff provide?
CDC: Our current guidance aligns with the Human Rights Commission that suggest trans gender have the right to use the changing and toilet facilities that align with their gender identity.
Q6: If applicable, do your facilities allow trans-identifying males to attend Women Only swim sessions?
Not applicable.
Our Verdict
They have no policies and allow visitors to do as they wish based on erroneous HRC guidance.
