International Olympic Committee restores fairness: Sex matters in women’s sport

IOC are protecting the female category

Speak Up For Women (SUFW) welcomes the decision by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) to retain a female category reserved for females only. This is a significant and long-overdue step toward restoring fairness, safety and integrity in women’s sport.

Sex matters in sport. The female category exists because of the very real and well-established performance gap between males and females. When that boundary is removed, women and girls lose meaningful opportunities to compete, succeed and be recognised.

The International Olympic Committee’s decision acknowledges this reality and reaffirms that women’s sport deserves protection.

This moment would not have happened without the brave women who stood up — often at considerable personal cost — to defend fairness in sport. Athletes, advocates and supporters have faced intimidation, loss of sponsorship, and reputational attacks for stating what was once considered obvious: females deserve their own sporting category.

Their courage has helped turn the tide.

The controversy surrounding New Zealand weightlifter Laurel Hubbard competing in the female Olympic category brought international attention — and considerable embarrassment — to Olympic sport. That situation highlighted the consequences of abandoning sex-based boundaries and underscored the need for clear, fair rules that prioritise female athletes. Many New Zealanders felt deeply uncomfortable seeing a male athlete take a place intended for women at the highest level of competition.

We hope this decision by the International Olympic Committee filters down to all levels of sport in New Zealand — from high-performance pathways and national sporting organisations, to regional competitions, community sport and school sport. Women and girls across Aotearoa deserve clarity, fairness and confidence that their opportunities will not be eroded.

Sporting bodies, including High Performance Sport New Zealand, Sport New Zealand, national federations and school sport organisations, should now take note. The direction of travel is clear. The female category exists for females, and policies should reflect that reality.

The International Olympic Committee’s decision marks an important course correction. It signals a return to fairness and a renewed commitment to protecting women’s sport for future generations.

SUFW calls on New Zealand sporting organisations to follow this lead and ensure that female categories remain for females only.

This is how fairness is restored.

This is how opportunities are protected.

This is how women’s sport moves forward.
